Islam, Education and Civilization: Between Theory and Reality
Islam and education are two things that cannot be divided. They have to go together, must be balance, and closely each others to build the good civilization.
Islam places great importance to acquiring knowledge and education. To seek knowledge is a sacred duty and a right of all Muslims. Even Rasulullah SAW commanded knowledge upon all Muslims, and encouraged them to seek knowledge as far they could reach, and also to seek it at all times. This importance of education is basically for two reasons. Education makes man a right thinker. Without education, no one can think properly in an appropriate context. It tells man how to think and how to make decision. The second reason for the importance of education is that only through the attainment of education; man is enabled to receive information from the external world. Following these commands and traditions, Muslim rulers insisted that every Muslim child acquired learning, and they themselves gave considerable support to institutions, and learning in general. This contributed largely with the commands of Islam to make elementary education almost universal amongst Muslims.
Islamic Education is one of the best systems of education, which makes an ethical groomed person with all the qualities, which he should have as a human being. The Western world has created the wrong image of Islam in the world. They don't know that our teachings are directly given to us from Allah, who is the creator of this world, through our Prophets. During the tenth and thirteenth centuries-often regarded as Islam's Golden Age. Islamic educators made the greatest advancements in sciences, arts and literature. When most of Western Europe, was relatively backward and unenlightened
In more than one respect Islam influenced Europe and subsequently the rest of the world with its system of education, including universality and its methods of teaching and granting diplomas. Georges Makdisi shows this adequately, and raises some crucial points in this respect. Amongst others, Islam influenced the West and the course of university scholarship in terms of academic freedom of professors and students, in the doctoral thesis and its defense, and in the peer review of scholarly work based on the consensus of peers. The influence also came in the form of the many translated books of Islamic scholars which formed the core of European education in their first universities (Montpellier, Bologna, Paris, Oxford…), which all were founded in the twelfth-thirteenth centuries.
